Start packing for a cross country move about 6–8 weeks before moving day, with the goal of finishing most boxes at least 7–10 days before you leave. Long-distance moves have more “last-mile” variables—pickup windows, loading time, weather, and travel days—so building in extra buffer keeps the process calm and avoids expensive last-minute shipping or replacement purchases.
6–8 weeks before: Begin with the items you won’t miss: off-season clothes, books, decor, extra linens, and guest-room storage. At the same time, start decluttering so you’re not paying to move things you don’t use. A structured, room-by-room approach makes this easier—this declutter-before-moving plan pairs well with early packing because you can donate/sell items before they ever reach a box.
4–5 weeks before: Pack non-daily kitchen gear (specialty appliances, baking tools), most closet items, and less-used hobby supplies. Order moving supplies, label boxes by room plus a short contents note, and set aside a “do not pack” zone for essentials.
2–3 weeks before: Pack the majority of the home. Leave out only what you truly need for daily living. This is also the right time to pack fragile items carefully and consolidate partial boxes to avoid wasted space.
7–10 days before: Aim to be nearly done. Pack everything except a small capsule of daily essentials. Prepare an “open first” box for each main room (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen) so the first night isn’t spent searching for chargers, towels, or a can opener.
Pack daily-use items last: a few outfits, basic toiletries, medications, kids’ essentials, pet supplies, and minimal cookware. Keep important documents, valuables, and irreplaceable items with you rather than on the truck.
If you can live comfortably with half your usual stuff put away, you’re on track. The sweet spot is when your home looks slightly “staged,” not chaotic—most boxes packed, clear walkways, and only essentials left out.
Include toiletries, medications, a few changes of clothes, chargers, basic tools (scissors, box cutter), paper towels, trash bags, snacks, and simple kitchen items like a mug and utensils. Add sheets and a towel so you can sleep and shower without hunting through boxes.
